More than 100 cities gathered this year to take part in the world's largest climate action hackathon on 27 October 2017.
Thousands of people in major cities across the world united to accelerate our ability to respond to climate change on a global scale.
Organised by Climate-KIC, the EU's initiative for climate innovation, Climathon brings together the challenges of the world's cities with the people who have the passion and ability to solve them.
Each city participating in the global Climathon works on a climate change challenge that reflects what affects local urban life most.
Anything from air pollution and waste management to transport and bio diversity is given the Climathon treatment. Below, you can find some of the best winning solutions that came out of Climathon this year.
Meet some Climathon winning teams!
1. Auckland, New Zealand
Winning team, TrashTag's mission is to increase recycling rates in New Zealand and reduce the amount of recyclable material that is sent to landfill. The TrashTag app identifies pieces of trash and lets the user know how to recycle it.
2. Long Beach, California, USA
To help the community achieve carbon neutrality, the winning team came up with an app that offers more convenient stations for renting alternative vehicles for commuting to campus and around Long Beach.
3. Brasov, Romania
To reduce the heat island effect of the city of Brasov, winning team The Weather Guys, use the data from various in-situ sensors to implement a statistical model used in an intelligent dynamic traffic rerouting system. The city traffic will be rerouted on alternative roads with lower temperature (greener areas, or along the water flows) based on real-time information about the temperature, CO2 emissions, humidity etc.
4. Zurich, Switzerland
Winning teams in Zurich's Climathon include; WE GROW - connecting gardens to growers in the city of Zürich through a web platform, Felix & DuDa - a revolutionary platform, which offers citizens of Zurich free cultural experiences, in return for feedback on issues regarding the current ecological and social status of the neighbourhood, Arc – A mobile app. which brings the charging point to the driver for electric cars, and Züri-Watt which aims to provide transparency to energy data, making it more understandable and incentivize citizens to reduce their energy consumption.
5. Hong Kong
Hong Kong's winner was the "Cool City" team for their innovative idea of applying reflective paints on walls of buildings to lower the heat effect and add graffiti elements to attract the public.
6. Glasgow, Scotland
Winning team, Zero Mission, tackled the challenge of having no fossil-fueled transport in Glasgow by 2032 and their idea was to have an app that incentivised the use of an integrated public transport system.
7. Tallinn, Estonia
To help improve the city's mobility, Green Track, created a mobility integration application allowing you to choose the greenest way to go from A to B.
8. Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago
Winners of Port of Spain's Climathon, created a Guerilla Farming Project to help communities implement food gardens in areas of Port of Spain facing particularly high levels of violence, where the gardens would be meant to serve as both food sources as well as opportunities for those facing loss as a means of healing through reconnection with community and environment.
To reuse building components for circular economy in Helsinki Metropolitan Area, winning team - Timberanha, add value to reused and re-purposed timber with streamlined deconstruction, sorting, labeling, certification and redistribution to wood suppliers. The goal is to bridge the gap between end-of-life materials and large-scale construction projects by providing trust and convenience.

Innovation requires insight. The Winning solution is going to make transport companies give up their data willingly in order to build a platform upon which Green and innovative infrastructure can be built.

To promote urban sustainability in Cape Verde, winners – Greeners created an artificial intelligence system to encourage and teach society to separate garbage at home that could be reused, plastic, card, glass, etc. In addition, they propose a project to implement the selective collection of these materials and generate a source of income or rewards for local communities.
12. Brussels, Belgium
To help improve energy performance in Brussels' buildings, the winning team in Brussels' Climathon developed Energy Doctor, a renovation advice service.
13. Florence, Italy
With a challenge of how can citizens and local stakeholders increase the resilience of the city to extreme weather events, STAPP Firenze is a communication and engagement-focused campaign, which is aimed at increasing social responsible behaviour and spreading consciousness about the environmental impact of citizens and tourists on the resilience of the city to extreme weather events.
I park Bike provides spaces to park your bike close to your home, if you don't have a backyard, garage or accessible cellar, to address Essen's smart commuting challenge.
14. Essen, Germany
Winners, Eco-work will implement shared working spaces in big corporations and government offices so people can commute less, thus saving carbon emissions and increasing their quality of life.

Using Earth Observation in Support of Sustainable Water Resources Management, Burjassot winners, MAWV (Make Available Water Visible) aim to develop an innovative approach to the management of water resources using satellite remote sensing and data analysis for a whole hydrographic basin.
17. Berlin, Germany
Berlin's four winning solutions include;
- E2M: Raising awareness through visualization of Breeze's air quality data. Action is triggered through gamification and appealing to the parental instinct.
- Just Kidding: Developing an educational game for kids to help busy Berlin parents to save energy at home through their kids' vision of a sustainable future.
- We Power: (Interactive) platform for private household users to save energy and create impact by taking historical statistical data in a user-friendly way.
- Waste Week: An interactive, inspiring event about bio waste to engage citizens in a dialogue to separate waste at home.
18. Bristol, UK
As Bristol grows, air pollution in the city has grown along with it. Winners, Hanging Gardens of Bristol, will use roof gardens to dramatically lower pollution in cities, add an element of insulation to reduce heating bills for buildings, and improve the visual appeal of a city.
19. Melbourne, Australia
During the summer, Melbourne is exposed to extreme heat and heat waves. These events pose a serious threat to our community's well-being and safety, as well as our infrastructure and economy. Winners, Chill Out, want to develop a website and complementing app to allow the public to look up and give feedback on locations that satisfy their need for safety and comfort during a heat wave.
20. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest winners are looking to increase community involvement through gamification and loyalty. Their solution is to introduce a gamification loyalty program for families connecting environment friendly public services (e.g. recycling, public transportation, public bicycle system).
21. Leece, Italy
LinkShiftShare aims at realizing an integrated management of traffic flow within coastal areas to regulate and control the access to the seaside and the coastal dune environment while monitoring entertainment activities and tourism flows in the area of interest.
22. Wellington, New Zealand
To help keep their title as Best City in The World, Wellington winning team, Vegetops, will create rooftop gardens for apartment buildings in the city.
23. London, UK
WhereThere are dealing with London's mobility issues by creating a plugin which brings sustainable transport choices to the heart of choosing accommodation.
24. Madrid, Spain
To solve the city's light pollution programme, the winning team in Madrid came up with a game-based application focused on creating awareness on light pollution, by allowing gamers to switch off lights of their city and contribute the savings to other social activities.
Fraîch'air sous Paris offer to use the Paris underground during heat waves which affect the city. It would look like an underground city with leisure, shops, etc. to prepare for increasingly hot summers, and to react to more frequent or more intense heat waves.

26. Cork, Ireland
To reach Cork's 2030 goal to run low carbon, sustainable transport and mobility in the city, winners – T.I.D.E. (Transport Infrastructure Development Executive) came up with a solution to create a catch all transport app, using Membership cards, Bike and car share, price reductions on goods and services to elimination of unnecessary journeys in the city.
27. Recife, Brazil
Brazil's two winners took on the challenge of helping solve some of Recife's climate challenges.
Winner, Oil Managers, solutions will create a website Cycloil which aims to link those who wish to discard oil correctly and those who have the interest of using it as a raw material, such as industries that produce soap, ink and bio diesel. Whilst the other winning team, Black Bulls, created an app to monitor prone flooding areas which send users alerts if there is flooding risk.
28. Delft, the Netherlands
To tackle Delft's smart energy efficiency challenge winning solution - Niche propose to reduce the heating energy requirements and cost by introducing temperature zoning, using excess heat from the lecture rooms and auditorium and by injecting hot water from thermal solar panels into the existing heating system.
29. Warsaw, Poland
With air pollution such a pressing problem facing the city of Warsaw, ECOmplex are tackling the issue by cleaning metro air exhaust vents with plants, but also due to their source of energy and heat, they would also be used as air purifying structures.
30. Armenia, Colombia
To tackle Armenia's water management, air quality, sustainable mobility and urban agriculture challenges, the winners of the Armenia city challenges came up with:
- Air Quality: A device for the capturing of contaminants (different type of compounds) from air systems.
- Water Management: Cartilla de educacion ambiental, the winning group developed an educational tool to improve the way school pupils are taught about the importance of water management
- Sustainable Mobility: Circuito integrado de movilidad, this project consisted in an innovative way to manage the mobility of the city of Armenia.
- Urban Agriculture: Banco de agricultura urbana is a project that aims to improve the way we grow, acquire and consume food in the region.
