BRIEFING: Food Sovereignty in the Circular Economy Challenge
Water, Food and Energy: three interconnected resources vital to sustaining life on earth. Yet every year, 1.1 billion people live without clean drinking water, 1.3 people billion live without electricity over 1 billion people hungry.
As the world's population expands to 9 billion in 2050, these figures will increase if action is not taken to address the effects of climate chaos and tense socio-economic and political impacts on the world's key resources.
Edinburgh Climathon aims to identify and support projects, individuals and staff working for companies to rethink their entire food chain in a Circular Economy way.
The Challenge: UK imports half of our food, and Scotland has a higher percentage of food imports. Edinburgh, hot bed of innovation, could be the hub of next-gen Circular Economy urban farms: with food growing start-ups developing innovative and sustainable ways of growing food in and around the city to benefit all its inhabitants.
Climathon is an initiative of Climate-KIC, Europe’s climate entrepreneurship programme.
ECCI is running two Climate-KIC programmes: the Accelerator programme to support start-ups to develop a rock-solid business plan, and Climate Launchpad, the world’s biggest green ideas competition.
Dr Isabella Guerrini de Claire, Aurora Sustainability co-founder and a coach for the Climate-KIC at ECCI, said: “We’re hugely excited to be bringing together Scottish innovators to drive climate action in our capital city. If you have the skills and passion to tackle climate challenges and create real change, get in touch today with your idea.
"If you’re interested in taking part, or have an idea for an activity or session that could be included in the event, please submit your activity proposal now." Contact Isabella at firstname.lastname@example.org
