Tree Inventory Challenge for the City of Athens

Together we can make Athens a greener place to live!

STREFI.jpg

Athens is the capital of Greece and its largest city. A densely populated city that has been continuously inhabited for over 3,000 years. Climate change scenarios indicate that extreme heat events are expected to affect the city’s future. Between now and 2050, average summer temperatures are projected to increase by 2°C. The Urban Heat Island Effect, intensified by the rising heat, exhibits severe temperature differences between the city center and its suburbs. Therefore, properly managing the green open spaces will assist in tackling the UHI effectively. Although scattered open green areas exist within city boundaries, they require strategic planning for their maintenance, management & further development. New collaborations should be encouraged with the private and public sector to achieve such a goal. The Municipality has already planned to set up a framework for the sustainable management of two important city landmarks, the National Garden and Lycabettus Hill.
