Better Decisions from Better Carbon Visibility

Help Consumers make better decisions by providing insight into companies' carbon footprints

By giving consumers visibility to the carbon footprint of different energy sources, which companies utilize these sources, and the degree to which they utilize these sources, we can empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions about their energy supply.

Challenge description

Description / Context

  • Electricity, Heat, and Other Energy accounts for 35% of all global carbon emission (link). The average consumer has little to no visibility of the carbon footprint associated with their energy consumption. Consumers have tremendous power because their purchasing decisions will ultimately drive corporate action.
  • If we can give consumers visibility to the carbon footprint of different energy sources, to which companies utilize these sources, and to the degree to which they utilize these sources, we can empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions about their energy supply.

Challenge vision

Vision / Expected Results

  • Climathon participants are invited to think about how we can create greater visibility for carbon footprints in the energy industry, similar to to nutritional information and calorie counts on packaging in the food industry. Reflections should focus primarily on electricity and fuel.

The questions below can help you move forward in thinking, but participants should feel free to explore what they think is most relevant:

  • What are the barriers to transparency on carbon footprint in the energy industry?
  • How can these barriers be removed?
  • What actions could be considered ‘low hanging fruit’?
  • How can the info be effectively communicated to consumers?
  • What is the role of government in enforcing these actions (local, state, federal)?
  • What actions can consumers or participating corporations take in the absence of government action?
