Visualize the effect of climate change on local plants

Support local climate scientists and educators in exploring the effect of climate change on local plants by creating an interactive bloom map.

Challenge description

Information about where and when plants bloom over years provide valuable insights into the local micro-climate and climate change. This information is used by climate educators, environmental organizations and scientists. For example, Ökostadt Rhein-Neckar is organizing excursions in the Heidelberg region that are aimed at demonstrating the effect of climate change on the local plants. However, the available data are sparse since collected manually. How can we create a comprehensive interactive map visualizing the bloom of local plants?

Challenge vision

When approaching this challenge, check out existing interactive maps of biodiversity, for example, iNaturalist. Think about the following questions:

  • What would be an efficient way to collect the bloom information? Would a smartphone app or a drone footage be helpful? 
  • How to efficiently identify plant species in the images? Check out free plant ID apps (example).
  • How to map plant locations on an interactive map?
  • How to visualize bloom patterns over time in a selected area?

The city of Heidelberg traditionally has a strong focus on environmental protection. In 2019, Heidelberg became the second city in Germany to declare climate emergency. Support the university town in reaching its goals of reducing CO2 emissions.
