The energy sector consists of electricity, gas, coal, liquid fuel, wind energy, solar, and other nonpetroleum fuel. These are all interlinked with the main focus is on the generation of electricity and the two primary fuels that Bangladesh possesses -- gas and coal.
The critical role of assured supply of electricity at an affordable price for social and economic development is universally recognized. The Bangladesh government has identified power supply as a major constraint on GDP growth, private investment, and overall economic development.
Dhaka itself consumes about 40% of the total generated electricity, and the demand for electricity is increasing by 10% annually.During the summer season, there is a shortage of electricity (due to use of electricity for irrigation purpose) which forces electricity departments to impose load shedding causing discomfort to consumers.
Though there is shortage in energy production, misuse of energy by negligent behavior of the citizens also results shortage of energy. That's why our honorable Prime minister recently said " We have a bad habit of not switching the lights off while leaving our offices or homes.Besides, huge water is wasted during the shower or for other usages.We are leaving homes without turning off the stoves, which is also a waste of natural gas and can cause serious accidents as well.We [government] are also working to reach electricity to every household by 2021,”
