Climathon is a global movement dedicated to solving the toughest climate challenges cities face today, which is manifested in a 24-hour hackathon taking place simultaneously in major cities around the world.

The basic process flow of the Climathon:
1. Setting the climate challenge: Cities identify their climate challenges and call on their citizens to come up with innovative solutions.
2. Coming up with solutions: Citizens, city officials, and sponsors connect under a shared vision for a healthier city, which is manifested in a 24-hour hackathon to find innovative city solutions.
3. Beyond the hackathon: Innovation happens when diverse perspectives are brought together—creating both tangible climate solutions for cities and empowered communities. Climathon is more than a hackathon, it's a movement.

Preparation for the Climathon

In all Climathon communication English is the common language. All information that is on your Climathon city page should be available in English, but it can be available in the local language as well. The city pages and Climathon documents can be bilingual. The Climathon team provides customisable materials – where the text can be translated into your local language. After the event the online report should also be done in English.

We highly encourage city hosts to reach out for sponsorship in their cities to make the event happen. You can give your sponsors visibility by uploading their logos on the city page and involving them in your social media campaign.

Once you have verified your city via email, your city will appear on the map as a registered city. The next step will be to set up your individual city page for your Climathon. This will be possible from June and we will notify you as soon as the city pages are ready to be set up. The most important next steps for you are:

1. If you are not a city authority or have no contact to the city authority yet, get in touch with them as soon as possible and talk about their involvement.
2. Start defining the city challenge(s) for your Climathon
3. Go out to local organisation and companies to seek sponsorship for your event.
4. Start looking for a venue

Each city sets up its own local climate change challenge – ideally with the help of the local city authority reflecting what impacts their urban life most. The setting of clear and relevant local climate challenges is essential to run a successful Climathon.

Some tips:

• Use a: “How ..” or “What.. “ question.
   - How can residents contribute to climate-friendly city planning?
   - What kind of energy-efficient solutions can be imagined to increase the cities resilience to heatwaves?
• Challenge areas: mobility, air pollution, water/waste management, food, energy , etc. (please see the website for further information and inspiration for challenge areas)

Get in touch if you wish tailored support to create your city challenge.

Each Climathon city has their own city page on the Climathon website. It contains all the information about the local Climathon, with mandatory and option sections to fill out. Participants will be able to apply through the city pages to the Climathon.

The main sections of the city pages will be:

• Introduction to the Climathon
• Challenge description
• Schedule
• People involved (Coaches, mentor, experts, jury)
• Prizes and Follow-up
• Partner/Sponsor section
• Venue
• Organisers details
• News/Blog section

In all Climathon communication English is the common language. However, if you have only local people at your event, the Climathon can be run in your local language. Make sure though to use English for online communication during the day - to be part of the online buzz Climathon creates on the day.

Yes, it is! It is a real climate change hackathon – where the magic happens somewhere during the 24 hours.
Do not be intimated - it is possible! You can prepare with a quiet room where people can go away for a little nap.

Once your city page is ready, your recruitment process can start. Climate-KIC provides the following to help with participant recruitment:

• A customisable city page where participants can register
• Marketing materials to help promote the Climathon

Participant numbers vary depending the different Climathon cities. To create a good atmosphere and create enough good solutions we recommend to have at least 50 participants present during a Climathon.

Participant application will be opened in September. Participants can apply if their city has a Climathon city page through the Climathon website.
