How to apply to Climathon events as a participant?

You can apply via your city’s Climathon website if your city has opened up the recruitment. Check out the page Find your Climathon to see if your city is hosting a Climathon.

What happens if there is no Climathon city page for my city?

If you cannot find your city in Find your Climathon no organiser has registered yet for a Climathon. Spread the word – and look for partner organisations and local organisers to bring the Climathon to your city!

What does Climathon’s format look like?

At the core of the Climathon programme is an ideathon, this is the main event, where you will get together digitally or in-person with fellow citizens and local stakeholders to come up with ideas to your cities' climate challenges.

Although the programme is built around this ideathon, local organisers can host additional warm-up events and follow-up activities to make sure the community remains engaged, ideas are shared and long-lasting impact can be achieved.

Integral to the local Climathons, there is the Global Climathon Awards - this is a global networking event to present, celebrate, and boost the most transformative ideas from local Climathons.

What can an ideathon look like?

The ideathon typically lasts between 12 and 72 hours (depending on your city) and focuses on providing the right context for you to create and develop their ideas together.

In general, an ideathon follows this flow of segments:

  • Kick-off
  • Build a team
  • Understand the challenge
  • Brainstorm ideas
  • Create and validate
  • Pitch

Who owns the idea submissions?

At Climathon, we operate under a mindset of open collaboration focused on transformative and climate-positive impact and, by default, all ideas publicly contributed to the Climathon website or ideated as part of any of the Climathon-branded events become shareable and reusable by anyone. If you have been inspired by a specific idea, we recommend that you get in touch with the relevant team or, at the very least, give credit to the team behind it by referencing the idea subpage as the original source.  Who knows, this might lead to an opportunity to work together or find new partners.

What if I have IP concerns about sharing my idea?

It is part of our ethos that openness and co-creation are at the foundation of innovations that can truly make a dent in our road to a decarbonised society. We understand, however, that there may be special cases where sensitive information may be difficult to share publicly. For teams in this position, we encourage you to share only what you feel comfortable with and to upload a high-level explanation of your idea on our website (we do not need all the technical details to assess its potential) to give the wider Climathon community an opportunity to reach out to you and share valuable feedback on your solution. If you need extra support with intellectual property concerns, please contact us at
