Together, we will imagine a sustainable viticulture for the future of our villages!

Vine-growing is at the heart of Murviel-lès-Montpellier's history. The village is located near the city of Montpellier, but still belongs to a rural landscape that is typical to the South of France. Today, Murviel's vineyards and vine growers are threatened by the consequences of climate change.

Murviel is a typical example of a rural vine-growing municipality in the South of France. A major part of its territory is located in the watershed of the Mosson river, and it is only 15 km from the Mediterranean Sea. The village is rich from its archeological heritage. In the heights of Murviel, one can witness the remains of a Gallic oppidum and a major Roman forum from the 1st century BC. At that time, the wine production started in Murviel, and developed during the Middle Ages. Like for other villages in Languedoc, vinyards became the main production during the 19th century. Those vestiges of the long lasting committment of Murviel to adaptation and resilience. Today, Murviel's wines are renowned for their high quality.

October 26th 2018 A Southern village commits to Climate Action

What's in it for me?

I will be part of an unforgettable collaborative experience in Murviel. For 24 hours I will bring in my own experience/expertise and contribute to find solutions to help  wine producers adapt to climate change. By exchanging knowledge in a friendly and creative atmosphere, I will learn from others and imagine a concrete project with my teammates. I will acquire both a global vision on adaptation to climate change and discuss very concrete solutions with wine producers, researchers, policy makers. And why not simply enjoy the tasting of good wines, occitan music, yoga, breakfast at sunrise in the vineyards...

Murviel is directly impacted by climate change since vine growing is a major stake for the village. Committing into the organisation of this Climathon is a strong message towards both vine growers and citizens, telling them that the municipality is willing to take all adaptative measures. In order to do so, Murviel wants to gather as much expertise as possible, along with everyone who enjoys the beauty of our typical landscapes and ecosystems.

Vineyards are planted and cultivated worldwide, wherever climate and soil allow it. It is a highly valued product that embodies that concept of long term management : it takes years, sometimes decades before a vineyards reaches its best production capacity. Moreover, wine making is very linked to the concept of geographical indication, which ensures long lasting incomes and typical landscapes in many rural areas. Climate change is a threat to those landscapes and rural areas. During this Climathon, we want to lead the way towards a co-constructed climate adaptation for those territories. So, what's in it for the world? Saving typical wines from the consequences of climate change... together!
