What is circular economy? How can we implement a circular economy mindset in Reykjavík?

Together we can bring innovative solutions and make our city more sustainable! Join the Reykjavík Climathon and connect with city officials and partners to bring about a shared vision for a more circular development! Turn the vision of circular economy into reality by working together with like-minded people, students, entrepreuneurs, young professionnals, developpers.

Come with an existing idea or simply work on a new solution with and inspiring team. Experts and mentors will support your team during the 24 hours in finding the best solutions to the challenges.

Global hackathon

Climathon is a global movement dedicated to solving the toughest climate challenges cities face today. In October 2018, in its fourth year of operation, the 24-hour climate hackathon takes place in more than 100 cities on 6 continents-and comes to Reykjavík for the second time!

How can we make tourism in Reykjavik more sustainable and eco-friendlier?

In the past 5 years, Iceland and especially Reykjavik have experienced a tourism boom with more than 2 million (2017) tourists visiting a year! This tourism boom is bringing more life into the city but is also impacting our environment with more waste and more green-house gas emissions.

Wasted food is a growing problem in our modern society and an untapped opportunity. Food waste occurs in all stages of the value chain of manufactured food products: from the production line, the transportation system, the sales, up to the consumer consumption.

How can we promote initiative of circular mindset in our community? Think circular-Be circular

We all realised that some of our house equipment is breaking down faster than it should be. We also noticed that it was cheaper to buy a new phone than repairing it. We wonder also why buying a new T-shirt was the same price as repairing the hole in the previous one.

Frequently asked questions

No, it is better to stay during the full 24-hours to experience all of Climathon. We have a busy schedule and it is important to be there at each step. You will have at your disposal a place to get some rest and alone time. We advise you to bring your sleeping bag and pillow to be abble to get a nap when needed. Don´t worry, Climathon is not just about working is it also about having an amazing experience and fun! Breaks and energiser moments will be organised in order to keep you at the top of your shape and charged like a battery!

No, you just need your motivation! Everyone is welcome to join with its own background. Architect, entrepreuneurs, artist, scientist, farmers, engineer have all something to share and their own expertise. Having a mixt group is the best to ideate!

Yes, don´t worry you will be integrated into a team during the process of team forming. Don´t be afraid to join alone, Climathon is the best place to connect with new people and no-one will be left aside!

Yes we will bring you food and make sure no one will be hungry. You will have vegetarian and vegan food to offer!

Yes, it is. Don´t worry, it is not 24-hours of only work! There will be time out to aerate your brain, move your body and relax. A planting tree session is organised outside to connect with the nature. A sleeping dedicated area will be at your disposal to take a nap and get some alone time. Food and drinks will be provided !

Climathon is a hackathon on climate change. A hackathon is a gathering where programmers collaboratively code in an extreme manner over a short period of time. This is a competition. Climathon is the same but has the purpose to tackle climate challenges faced by the city who is organising it.


Yes, this is a competition and the best teams will be rewarded with some prices. We will give more information about the prizes later on.
