Salerno is a town of 134 057 inhabitants, the second largest municipality in Campania by population and 29th nationally.

Salerno was home to the Salernitan Medical School, which was the first and most important medical institution in Europe at the beginning of the Middle Ages. Since 1968 the city has been home to the University of Salerno, which has been located since 1988, in the form of a campus, in the neighboring municipalities of Fisciano and Baronissi.

In recent years, it has been one of the first tourist destinations in the world due to its geographical location, which places it at the center between the Amalfi and the Cilento coast.
