One of the biggest environmental problems in Nyíregyháza is the high level of air pollution. This is mainly caused by pollutants from residential heating and urban mobility. However, the problem can be solved through public cooperation.

Solution context

The air pollutants measurement is limited to the officially installed equipments, which is only 1 station in Nyíregyháza. The measurements made every hour. To better understand the sources of the pollution, and produce near-realtime monitoring with validated data, the measurement sources need to be multiplied drastically. 

Solution description

Our solution is a remote measurement device which can be installed on public transportation vehicles, and could make measurements in PM2.5 and PM10 with an 5 seconds of maximum sampling rate. The data consits more environmental data such as the exact GPS position of the measurement, temperature, humidity, etc. 

The large amount of data could be determined by time and geographical position, so the past and present data could be monitored, pollutant sources could be tracked. The large amount of data and the different data sources can lead to a correlation understanding between different parameters (dewpoint, temperature, etc.).

 The prototype have a particulate matter sensor, a gps module and a gprs mobile radio. The data acquisition happens automatically. The data sent directly to the processing server where it can be visualized or processed for further predictions.
