Extreme rainfall events can also affect the surrounding environment, especially in cities with a combined sewer network system, like Berlin.

Solution context

Urban areas are increasingly exposed to extreme precipitation events and flooding which leads to more than $ 40 billion of damage and many deaths annually. Yet, urban flood management is extremely challenging and appropriate infrastructural projects are very costly.

Solution description

Flowmetrics’ dynamic flood flow management helps cities to tackle urban flooding in a way that is intelligent, cost-effective and citizen-inclusive. The tool identifies urban flood risk hotspots and nearby areas that can withstand a lot of water, and quantifies their absorption capacity by using a distributed network of sensors as well as satellite imagery wherever possible. During a flood, highly impacted areas are connected with the identified absorbing areas by using mobile infrastructure that can easily be put in place by citizens and professionals.
