Foodprint - Stop the waste of food

Foodprint - Stop the waste of food

In Germany alone exist more than 9.000 big canteens, which serve more than 100 people every working day. These canteens invest 4.5 billion Euro in food per year and the sad fact is, that one third of the food is thrown away. We want to change it!

Foodprint - Stop the waste of food

In Germany alone exist more than 9.000 big canteens, which serve more than 100 people every working day. These canteens invest 4.5 billion Euro in food per year and the sad fact is, that one third of the food is thrown away. We want to change it!

Solution context

The amount of food which is thrown away just in Germany is extremely high. Very often people are not aware of their own behavior.

Canteen

With our solution we want to

  • make food waste measurable.
  • educate people in a fun way and strengthen the team spirit within the company.
  • individualize the menu in the canteen.
  • use the system also outside the canteen, when we collected enough data to feed the AI.

Our Goal: Awareness of Food Waste, Awareness of healthy food low in CO², fun, Improved planning on food orders for canteen operators

Solution description

Let's imagine the following scenario:

You pick a tray, which is marked with a QR-code and choose your lunch. Then you walk with your tray to the cashier and you pay with your card or canteen batch. At the cashiers point the tray is scanned automatically by an QR-code scanner. at this point we know who owns which tray and what is on the tray. Then it’s time for your lunch. After finishing lunch, you bring your tray to the band-conveyor of the canteen. There we scan the tray with a smart camera plus an AI-based algorithm. From the picture we can define the weight and can calculate the gap. With this data we can show for the whole canteen how much food is thrown away for each type of food and we can calculate the costs of the food which was thrown away.

We show the overall result of the whole canteen in the canteen on a giant screen for the whole building. Each individual can see their own waste of food and money in their individual account. In the next step we define individual goals and rewards for everybody to waste less food. But we will also create a competition between different departments. The winner decides on the prices each month, this can be different team events, like e-go card, cooking classes, sport events and many more depending on the decision of the team. This strengthen the team spirit for each team and will make aware of the waste of food and money. Besides this the canteen operator can plan proper now and knows exactly which food is relevant for the individual canteen. This can be developed further with mathematical models depending on the season, origin of food or other relevant events. In a next step we want to create individual dishes depending on the previous measured behavior, but also depending on fitness and health targets of each and every employee as an option. After an intense learning phase, the algorithm can be also used for smartphones to track all your meal, even when you are not eating in this particular canteen.
