Poll. Plan. Act.

We propose a participative process to bring in line university policy and sustainable behaviour on campus.

Solution context

Universities serve the public on the one hand by cutting edge research and innovation, and on the other hand by forming the future of many young people. They thus have the opportunity to be at the forefront of climate action and can in fact influence generations to come to adopt a sustainable lifefstyle. Although, there are many small behavioural changes that could be made to improve sustainability on campus, ultimately, they are far outweighed by big shifts in university policy. Furthermore, studies show that student's sustainable behaviour is improved by universities that incoroprate sustainability into their overall concept. There are leading examples that have implemented ambitious climate action plans and some have already achieved carbon neutrality. But the vast majority of universities, including prestigious ones, are still lacking the vision and the concrete plan to a sustainable future.

Solution description

We propose a three point plan to gain knowledge about the status quo, motivate for change and execute the sustainability campaign in tight collaboration:
- Execute a university wide poll on sustainability and climate action
- University administration declares support of the creation of a climate action plan
- Climate assembly with all stakeholders to implement the plan with the ratification from the poll
