Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela at the forefront of climate actions

With the Climathon, it is expected to reach binding agreements that are sustainable and practical to convert the cities of Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela in resilient cities, solving the climate challenges: access and water sanitation, integrated solid waste management and climate oversight.

Tegucigalpa y Comayagüela son dos ciudades gemelas, en un crecimiento dinámico que juntas conforman el Municipio del Distrito Central (MDC), ubicado en el departamento de Francisco Morazán de la Región Central. Tener una población urbana de 1.2 millones de personas (INE, 2014). Esto implica que la capital alberga el 25% de la población urbana del país.

Según el Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE, 2018), el área administrativa del MDC se divide en 892 vecindarios, un sector rural que tiene 41 aldeas y 293 aldeas, con aproximadamente 1,514 km².

Tegucigalpa ha crecido en los últimos 50 años, pero se ha convertido en una ciudad desorganizada debido a la falta de planificación y su alta vulnerabilidad a los efectos climáticos. Generando que sus habitantes carecen de lugares adecuados para vivir sin condiciones que faciliten sus servicios de agua, energía y una adecuada recolección de residuos sólidos.
