We can imagine how to design and assemble quilted jackets so that they are easily recyclable at the end of their life.
Fast fashion, with its wear-it-once-and-throw-it-away products, emits more carbon than international flights and maritime shipping combined. Besides, 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year. And washing certain types of clothes sends tons of plastic into the ocean. This problem can be solved, on the one hand, by buying less clothes, but on the other hand it requires new garments to be designed to be circular, recycled and recyclable from the very beginning.
As sustainable brands like Ogyre show us, this change is possible and is happening right now. As a matter of fact, Ogyre’s male swimsuits are produced with the equivalent of 6 plastic bottles collected from the sea and are made with a yarn characterized by a unique polymer that allows its traceability.
Ogyre designs and assembles these products so that they are easily recyclable at the end of their life. Their swimsuits, indeed, are made from 100% recycled and recyclable polyester. But not all garments are the same. This challenge will thus be focused on the circular design of a very different item: a quilted jacket.
Like the swimsuit case study, which will be provided by Ogyre’s founders, a totally recyclable quilted jacket made of recycled materials will require participants to use imagination in order to provide new original ideas about how to create a fully sustainable value chain that would allow its production.
This challenge will be involving designers, physicists, chemists, engineers and experts in new and sustainable materials, but also people working in business, art, project management and social sciences. Indeed, the main goal of the challenge will be to design a very basic recyclable jacket prototype and to contextualize it, by specifying what innovative value chain its production could bring to life, from an environmental, social and technical point of view.
For example, ideas could focus on
- how to design new ways of assembling recyclable jackets
- how to collect and assemble totally recyclable components for the jacket (lining, zip, elastic band and other accessories…)
- how to reuse the same components of old jackets for the creation of other garments
- how to experience with innovative materials
- how to involve the customers in the circular process
