Challenge

Pooling innovation to address the effects of climate change in the seafood industry

Pooling innovation to address the effects of climate change in the seafood industry

ENGLISH

Fisheries and aquaculture are facing the effects of Climate Change, influencing biological diversity and ecosystems all over the world.

Climate Change effects are multiple:  increase of sea temperatures, acidification of the sea, extreme climatic events, changes in wind patterns, sea level rise, etc. They will directly affect fishing and aquaculture activities now and in the nearest future. Considering the challenges ahead, we need a better understanding on how these changes affect and will modify seafood production for planning sustainable growth.

We would like to invite students, researchers, fisheries and aquaculture stakeholders and the society in general to jointly identify risks and solutions for the effects of Climate Change. We will create a multidisciplinary group to assess priorities and knowledge gaps of fisheries and aquaculture sectors related to climate change. The agenda is designed to foster dialogue and to explore the benefits of joint actions to accelerate innovation.

The results will be useful for the development of plans to adapt to the effects of Climate Change, to facilitate new research lines and to raise awareness within and beyond the seafood industry.

The activity is supported by two European H2020 funded projects ClimeFish y SAF21. International students and early stage researchers will actively participate.

Agenda of the day:

11:00 Opening and presentations
11:25 Session dynamics
12:00 Coffee Break
12:15 Open discussion: Addressing the effects of climate change in the seafood industry
13:15 How to move forward
13:30 Closure
