Sri Lanka ranks second in global climate risk index
The Long-Term Climate Risk Index listed Puerto Rico and Sri Lanka as the top two affected countries. The index is part of a report, Global Climate Risk Index 2019, which was released at the annual climate summit in Poland’s Katowice city last year. The report was prepared by analysing damages caused by the extreme weather events that took place from 1998 to 2017.
Jaffna had the privilege of hosting the first Climathon in Sri Lanka
The livelihoods of most people in Jaffna depend on agriculture and fisheries. A little changes in the climate have a huge impact on the biodiversity of the region which undoubtedly has direct impact on the livelihoods of the locals. Organic Movement of North East (OMNE) together with Dilmah Conservation brought Climathon to Jaffna last year.

Climate-resilient, sustainable cities can only be attained if people learn how to work together towards shared outcomes. This need goes well beyond traditional political dynamics and relationships towards a more holistic approach with new models of governance; an inclusive mindset towards working with communities and novel solution providers; and building different working relationships. A group of change-makers from different backgrounds unit together to lead youth towards this mission.
Meet the organisers
OMNE is a movement bringing together hundreds of food activists, small-scale organic farmers, fisher-folk and agricultural workers mainly from Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka. Built on a strong sense of unity, solidarity between these groups, it defends ecological agriculture for food sovereignty as a way to promote good health, social justice and dignity.
