Integrating ICT in Urban Transitions: Transforming Lagos to a Smart City

Recent projections show that by 2050, half of the world population will reside in cities/urban areas, which means a significant increase in CO2-emissions per m2. The impending population increase has more side effects for cities in Africa and critically for Lagos. Currently, Lagos is the most populous city in Africa, serves as the commercial capital of Nigeria. Population growth and increasing urbanisation in Lagos has significantly outnumbered social infrastructure such as mobility and health, and has placed an increasing demand on energy, environmental and social resources. As of today, Lagos cannot meet its numerous municipal and industrial energy demands due to poor energy infrastructure. Also due to the geographical location of Lagos and its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the state has been faced with climate change related threats such as air pollution, increase in temperature, storm surge, sea level rise and severe flooding — all of which have resulted in the loss of lives and properties. While these are current challenges confronting Lagos, future population growth would even pose bigger challenges.

Urban transitions hold a great promise for sustainable development in Lagos. With this Lagos Climathon Challenge, we aim to help to develop ideas, organise stakeholders, mobilize partnerships and urgent action to push urban transitions and transformation within Lagos.

So what can be done?

Help us develop innovative tools, identify policy pathways and best practices toward urban transitions in Lagos. At the moment, Lagos has the potential to improve its mobility system, shift to low carbon energy generation, reduce floods and even optimise and benefit from its numerous municipal waste. Lagos, the capital of technology start-ups and innovation in Africa, could be the test bed for urban living labs which integrates technologies with social solutions to foster urban transitions across multiple sectors.

Join us!

We aim to promote urban sustainability in Lagos by integrating ICT with social solutions in five key areas. Specifically, we hope to help redesign mobility systems that are not only efficient but also sustainable in the long run, understand how to mitigate flooding and sea level rise, make renewable energy accessible to everyone at a cost-effective price, develop tools to improve the value chain of waste management in Lagos, and design ways by which urban spaces can be reallocated to feature more green areas.

Let's come together to develop ideas and share insights on how to trigger urban transitions in Lagos by:

  • Improving energy services with low carbon energy systems and ICT nodes
  • Integrating ICT in mobility and transport
  • Addressing flooding and sea rise with smart technologies
  • Recognising the potential of waste management for municipal energy generation
  • Redesigning urban spaces for all
