Minsk towards Sustainable Future

In Belarus strong climate change became visible in the late 1980s. At the same time instrumental observations of the weather in the country began. The peculiarity of the current warming is not only in its unprecedented duration, but also in the higher air temperature, which exceeded the climatic norm by 1.1 ° С. It is noteworthy that the increase in the temperature regime, according to the latest weather forecast, occurred almost every month, with the exception of November.

Therefore we’d like all the participant to focus at Climathon on the following issues:

  • Unfavorable and dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena

Every year they are registered in our country from 9 to 30 with a total damage of tens and hundreds of billions of Belarusian rubles. Let the number of such phenomena not increase, but they acquire an extreme character, becoming atypical for our country: squalls, tornadoes, hurricanes, strong flooding of city streets, etc. Many of them cover significant territories of the republic. In the current year, 55 settlements of Minsk and Mogilev regions suffered because of strong gusts of wind - up to 31 meters per second.

The global climate change affects the frequency and intensity of precipitation. In some regions of the country this is expressed in snowless winters, in others it provokes heavy snowfalls, destructive snowstorms and hurricane winds. And frequent "crossings through zero" disrupt the work of transport, worsen the working conditions in the open air, cause ice, drifting, ice and snow adherence on wires and engineering structures, which leads to damage to communication lines and power lines.

  • Increased morbidity and additional deaths

All the longer the periods with critical temperature values, which especially in large cities affects the health of residents. Abnormally high air temperatures lead to an increase in the number of hospitalizations, road accidents, as well as deaths and accidents. Temperature changes are dangerous for meteozavisimyh people: exacerbating the course of allergies, heart and nerve diseases. There are problems with the respiratory system due to the accumulation of dust, soot and toxins in the air.

  • Chernobyl Catastrophe

MINSK and other cities of BELARUS have been experienced different climate changes especially after CHERNOBYL disaster. A Huge territory was POISONED.

The consequences of Chernobyl disaster is even more painful: they stay not only in our memory but also physically - in the forms of chemical components around us. The half-life of cesium-137 is 30 years, strontium-90 - 29 years, americium-241 - 432 years, and plutonium-239 - 24 thousand years. Huge numbers, aren't they?! It all brought massive input on Climate Change.

Therefore we'd like to organize a hackathon which would last for 48 hours (this is the average lengths of hackathons at Imaguru Hub). On the hackathon the participants would be able to propose solutions on the issues that our country will have to struggle for many years in future.

Mentioned above and many more challenges, connected with Climate Change we're facing now have to be known by people. This upcoming Climathon is a great chance to bring people all together and motivate the community. This would be not just an ordinary hackathon - this is what might drive the whole culture, with the potential of 10 mln ppl to start from changing themselves.
