The time is now! Climathon is Honolulu's 1st ever global climate action solutions hackathon!

Honolulu's economy thrives on tourism. In 2018, ~10M tourists came to Hawaii. What solutions can we come up with together to reduce the impact of tourism to Hawaii?

Honolulu is the remotest city of its size in the world. 

Honolulu means "sheltered harbor" or "calm port".

As of 2015, Honolulu was ranked high on world livability rankings, and was also ranked as the 2nd safest city in the U.S. 

Visitors to the Hawaiian Islands spent $17.82 billion1 in 2018, an increase of 6.8 percent compared to 2017, according to preliminary year-end statistics released today by the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Additionally, 217,000 jobs statewide were supported by Hawaii’s tourism industry in 2018, up 6.8 percent from 2017.

Our Challenge

We see the effects of climate change first-hand and are already adapting and developing solutions to make our community more livable in extreme weather and changing climate.

How can we reduce the human impact of tourism in Honolulu?

There are ~250K tourists in Hawaii every single day. Tourism is a vital part of our economy. Let's make the impacts of tourism more sustainable for every person.
