Help Sheffield turn electrical waste into practical tools for people that need them

13 Nov 2020 - 13 Nov 2020

Climathon is coming to your city!

Climate impacts are touching every part of the globe - but you know the climate challenges your community is facing the best.

Climathon is a global movement that organises locally; a city-based programme that offers a clear pathway to climate action.

At the core of the Climathon programme is a yearly ideathon that takes place in your city and in hundreds of other cities across many continents and time-zones.

Over the span of the 12-72 hour ideathon, a diverse group of participants, ranging from policymakers to hackers, youth to academics, students to business leaders, will come together to collaborate on forward-thinking ideas that tackle local climate challenges.

Take part and join a global community of thousands who want to act now, and rethink the cities we live in and the future we want as citizens.

Did you know?

The UK consumes 1.8m electronic items per year and less than 20% of that e-waste is recycled

It is estimated that in Britain each year we throw away a million tonnes of e-waste

E-waste equates to 70% of overall toxic waste in landfill

More than a third of parents whose children were aged between five and 16 do not have access to a laptop or computer

Help Sheffield turn electrical waste into practical tools for people that need them

In Sheffield this year, our Climathon will focus on the question "How can we help Sheffield turn electrical waste into practical tools for people that need them?"

BetterPoints are working with representatives from around the city of Sheffield including the University of Sheffield, Sheffield City Council, Aspire Community Enterprise and Sheffield Digital, with a wealth of knowledge and skills, to tackle the challenge of WEEE and its impact on the environment. The aim is to work as a multi-disciplinary group to explore the challenges of the digital divide and how the circular economy of WEEE could be part of the solution.

This challenge will be in the form of a virtual Climathon event on Friday 13th November 2020. In the lead up to the event there will be two webinars which will set the scene of the challenge. The first will set out the circular economy of e-waste and it's impact on the environment and the second will look at the issues and challenges faced by those residents in Sheffield who do not have access to technology, skills or confidence to get online, or who are unable to gain access to services due to having no connectivity.

The aim of Climathon is to raise climate awareness, disrupt the status quo, and rethink the places we live in and the future we want as citizens. We aim to make a real local difference in ensuring more e-waste is correctly and efficiently disposed of, recycled or reused in Sheffield by those who need it most.

Join us on the 13th November to build the foundations for long-lasting climate and social enterprise collaboration, allowing genuine conversations with like minded individuals and groups to make a real change in Sheffield and beyond.
