Title of Challenge
ICT and the Sustainable City: creating solutions to improve the rates of recycling and foster energy efficiency
Description of city challenge
How can we improve the rates of recycling and energy efficiency in Vilnius city by using ICT?

In Lithuania for a long time we have an issue of low recycling rates. According to social research (conducted by "Spinter tyrimai" in 2016) today only 37% of Lithuanian people are regularly recycling their waste. However, by 2020 Lithuania has promised to increase this rate up to 50%. The worrying fact is that the most passive about recycling are young people. Only 14% of 18-25 years old youth are recycling and the most active are elderly people. So, the question is how are we going to improve the situation if young generation do not have a habit to recycle?
Education is really important and we believe that in IT savvy country, we can find some innovative solutions to bring the message & to raise an interest for this topic among the young people.

Energy efficiency is one of the most important issues in modern cities. At the same time, it's one of the best ways to increase energy supply security and decrease greenhouse gas and other pollutant emissions. The efficient use of energy resources and energy is one of Lithuania’s key long-term strategic objectives in the energy sector. In the light of Energy efficiency directive 2012/27/EU, Lithuania has to ensure that the cumulative amount of 11.67 TWh of energy will be saved by 2020 and is drafting required documentation to set in place an Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme or adopt alternative measures, enable and promote faster development of Energy Service Companies and hasten the rate of public and multi-apartment building renovations and modernization of street lightning.
If a plan for the public buildings is being developed and implemented quite efficiently, we still lack such efficiency in the households of the city dwellers.

Both topic s are interconnected, therefore we will look for ideas that would offer solutions to both problems. Join us for an intense brainstorming and prototypes building session - it's our time to propose some ideas to Vilnius city municipality to test and implement!
